Why Should You Consider Using Spirulina?

Why should you consider using Spirulina? I did and it changed my life. No seriously, it really did!

Evidence suggests Spirulina helps in the management of;*

  • Diabetes;
  • Thyroid, Pancreas and Liver problems;
  • Lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and may increase “good” HDL cholesterol;
  • Is reported to help with the prevention of certain cancers;
  • Detoxes heavy metals;
  • Helps your intestines;
  • Reduces inflammation;
  • Improves Immune Response,
  • Boosts Energy levels,
  • Regulates blood sugar;
  • Helps you to lose weight;
  • Lowers blood pressure;
  • And…to be continued

My story…

A few years ago, I was overweight, soon after I had to have my gall bladder removed in an emergency operation and I was later to learn I had type 2 diabetes. I also had a fatty liver. I was continually tired and lacked energy. And I was very obese. I also lead a highly stressful lifestyle, eating and drinking too much. I was a candidate for a place at the funeral home. Seriously.

A Chinese Alternative Remedy Doctor recommended Spirulina to me. On his advice, I added Spirulina to my diabetes diet plan Three years later its helped to change my life. I have lost 23 kilos (50 pounds/3 ½ stone) and Spirulina has helped me to control my diabetes by considerably reducing my blood sugar levels. It has changed my life. I´m full of energy again. I´m teased that I am like Taz, the cartoon character the Tazmanian Devil! Oh and I´m nearly 60 but genuinely feel 20 years younger.

I have found Spirulina to be such a wonderful natural product that has helped to make a real difference to my health. The purpose of this site is to share news about the benefits with as many people as I can, so others can benefit from using this product without having to go through what I had to.

Do you suffer from any of the health problems listed above? If not why not check with your Doctor or healthcare professional to see if they recommend it for your condition. There are some conditions that it is not currently recommended for which we have highlighted here.

Why Should You Consider Using Spirulina?

  1. This is a very good content with relevant pictures, my concern is on the dosage of Spirulina; how much dosage should one take. I believe even though it’s proven to boost your immune system, if you overdose it, it will definitely weaken the system. what I want to know as well is, have your findings been approved or verified by the World Health Organisation (WHO)?

    Other things being equal, this is an informative and educational content. we need to be well informed about what is good for our bodies and health.

    • Thank you for your feedback and your comment. I´m glad you like the content. I decided to highlight the benefits of Spirulina as in the “West” it is not widely known about, outside of health and nutrient enthusiasts and specialists. The more I investigated, the more I discovered the surprising benefits of spirulina.

      You are right to be cautious. You should not overdose any food supplement.

      Spirulina is officially described as a super-food, so there are no official WHO recommendations on amounts. But as with any food, it should be taken in moderation. I regularly monitor for research of this remarkable superfood and will post developments here.

      Our Doctor recommended 5 tablets of 500mg, twice a day for my condition – fatty liver, kidneys and diabetes type 2. This amounts to 5 grammes a day. You should avoid taking it at night, in case it impacts on your sleep – it boosts your energy levels. These amounts have made a huge and positive difference to my personal strength and health. In addition to helping me to manage and largely overcome these conditions, it was only by observation, that I realised, over time, I had considerably increased energy levels. Furthermore, I have not had a cold, virus or allergy since I started to take it regularly. I recognise that this is anecdotal but speaking from personal experience, it has been highly beneficial. And believe me, I was a sceptic at first. “An algae” that can improve my health? But it did.

      Dosages for other conditions are recommended as follows:

      Examine.com an independent educational organisation that analyses nutrition and supplement research has the following minimum & maximum recommendations

      “For cholesterol, a dosage of 1-8 g per day may be impactful
      For muscle performance, doses of 2-7.5 g per day have been used
      For blood glucose control, very mild effects have been seen with 2 g per day
      Blood pressure may be affected at doses of 3.5-4.5 g per day
      Effects for fatty liver have been seen at doses of 4.5 g per day”

      There is no published evidence that we have seen, that it will be beneficial to your health if you consume higher than the amounts described above. So, I repeat, be careful not to overdose. The absolute maximum seems to be 7.5 grammes a day.

      As you can see these recommendations are broadly within the range that were recommended to us.

      I have also noted, when combined with daily exercise, enhanced muscle development.

      I continue to monitor research, but as you rightly highlight. Spirulina, as with all food and supplements should be taken in moderation. In the interests of helping more people, if you find reliable sources that make recommendations on dosages, I would be interested to hear from you again.

      There are as in everything, some critics, particularly a few people who have found they are allergic to this superfood. But as I highlight elsewhere in this site, people can be allergic to strawberries, sea food, cucumber and a wide range of other products. If that is the case, then it’s not right for that person. However, for most people, adding well sourced, quality Spirulina to a well-balanced diet can result in many of the benefits described in this site.

      Thank you again for stopping by.

      Best Regards,

      Trevor

    • Dear Anthony,

      Thank you for visiting our site. Just to be clear, we are not advocating that Spirulina, will prevent anybody from catching or suffering from Covid-19. However there is evidence that well sourced Spirulina can strengthen the immune system. The entire article explains in detail, but this is one of the main paragraphs:

      Does Spirulina offer any kind of protection against the Coronavirus – COVID-19 ? Whilst there are studies 1, 2, and reports from health institutions that indicate that Spirulina helps to strengthen the immune system* against viruses, there is no evidence it will protect you against the Coronavirus – COVID-19.

      Best Regards,

      Trevor

  2. Hi John, Really good article, very interesting and detailed. I’m sure it will help many. I had problems with Diabetes-2, and I managed to regulate it by various methods, first by weight loss and then by consuming a similar medicine that you describe. Quite a few people do not know that this is possible and they consume diagenesis and other chemistry. With us, they say: For every disease – one plant! Truth. I applaud you and congratulate you on a great blog. Goran from Bosnia

  3. most disease that people suffer such as diabetes, cholestrol, uric acid etc, you name it comes from nutritional deficiency (vitamin, mineral, essential fatty acid), eating spirulina can be a great way to fill those nutritional deficiency since it has abundant of vitamin, mineral and essential fatty acid
    As for the corona virus, same story, people could eat the spirulina to fill the nutritional deficiency for the sake of increasing their immunity, I believe if people can fulfill their nutritional deficiency, those virus are nothing to fear of as their immunity in great shape, it’s for people that never eat those food that contain lots nutrition that should worry about the virus

    Excellent article by the way

  6. Personally I prefer Chlorella as it has a wider spectrum of nutrients contained in it – but Spirulina has a higher protein content, and I think also has more Iron than Chlorella does too.

      Thanks for the visit. Yes, Chlorella (often in Spirulina too), is excellent too. But as you say Spirulina has a high protein content. We will be reviewing some Chlorella products for the site so thank you for the feedback.
