Natural Treatment for Gastric Ulcer?

Is Spirulina a natural treatment for gastric ulcer? According to an animal study, Spirulina alleviates gastric ulcer´s caused by the prolonged use of aspirin. Doctors writing in The Independent Newspaper of Bangladesh also say it can help with stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal problems.

Anecdotally I can say that it has helped me as I used to suffer from gastrointestinal problems, particularly after visits to Mexico. However, since I have regularly taken Spirulina, these started to ease and then disappear. Over the last 12 months or so, I have not been aware of any. The claims that Spirulina help to restore healthy intestinal flora would appear to be accurate. I am not suggesting Spirulina is a cure for diarrhoea, but it appears to have helped me with gastrointestinal pain by restoring my intestinal flora to a healthy condition**.

Treatment For Gastric Ulcer – Spirulina?

According to a report in the US National Library of Medicine, Gastrointestinal problems in Bangladesh are common. So, we think its reasonable to say that Doctors there have ample experience in managing this ailment. The experience from Bangladesh can help us assess whether it really can alleviate gastric ulcers and gastrointestinal
problems.

Other than the animal study, we are not aware of any human studies to confirm its findings, but we continue to monitor to see when a further study is undertaken and when it is, we will share it on this site.

Meantime, please remember Spirulina is packed with nutrients! Just 3 grammes of Spirulina is the equivalent of 3 kilos of Fruit & Vegetables (see the video below) And remember, Spirulina is a superfood, not a medication.

If you have an ulcer or gastrointestinal problems, and you have checked with your own doctor or Medical Professional, whether it’s a good idea for you to take Spirulina, I can certainly vouch for its many benefits.

My experience

I´m not a Doctor. But I have an interest in alternative remedies. Since I was encouraged to take Spirulina by my Alternative Remedy Doctor, my health has improved considerably. Spirulina has really helped me to mitigate a range of symptoms for different conditions including easing some gastrointestinal problems.

I feel more energised as if my body has been renewed. I have lost weight** – a lot, combined with watching my diet and regular exercise. But gained in muscle weight and so I am in much better shape. I genuinely feel 10 to 15 years younger than before.

I have so much energy. My blood sugar levels have stabilised. My memory has improved immensely, my candida & IBS (gastrointestinal related) have gone and I rarely have gas or wind now. In the past I often suffered at night. No longer. And I haven´t had a cold, an allergy, hay fever or the flu for three years.

There is some evidence it boosts your immune system. Blocked noses are now a distant memory. My blood pressure has reduced although I recognise the fact I have lost weight and I take 50 g of losartan potasico daily are important with that too. But my blood pressure is far lower and a study (US National Library) has indicated that Spirulina reduces blood pressure too.**

What is Spirulina?

Let’s be clear, Spirulina is NOT a seaweed. Technically it’s cyanobacteria. Encyclopaedia Britannica defines it as cyanobacteria. An even higher authority is referenced here.

A more recent authority, Wikipedia says; “Modern botanists restrict the term algae to eukaryotes”. However, for the sake of simplicity we call it a “blue-green algae” and that its from freshwater habitats. That´s why it’s NOT a seaweed. Perhaps it would be easier if we all referred to Spirulina as being a “freshwater, blue green algae”. This is another definition. We think freshwater, blue green algae is the easiest definition for most people to understand. But technically, if you can pronounce it, it’s cyanobacteria

Choose your Spirulina Carefully

We emphasise on various pages in this site, the importance of obtaining your spirulina from a reliable, toxin free and secure supplier. That´s because as the cyanobacteria or freshwater, blue green algae grows, it soaks up anything that´s in its environment, i.e. in the water its growing in. That is why we labour the point about selecting the Spirulina you consume carefully.

History of Spirulina

This cyanobactera (freshwater blue green algae – Spirulina) has been around for 3.6 billion years! Researchers think it’s; “the evolutionary bridge between bacteria and green plants”.

More recently, when Cortes arrived in America, It was known to be a food consumed by the Aztecs. In the 1960´s French Researchers found Spirulina in abundance at Lake Texcoco, Mexico.

In the 1940´s, A French botanist found that people in Chad were eating a dry bread called “daei”; it was made of Spirulina. It is still harvested from their lakes and used for cooking. Likewise, in Mexico where it is known as Tecuitlatl. And it’s not just ancient and traditional tribes. NASA are studying it as a food for astronauts for flights to Mars.

How well researched is Spirulina? Is it safe for me to take?

Is it right for me? The more I have researched Spirulina I have found a few rare examples of people who have not had a good experience with Spirulina. However, let’s keep things in perspective, this is a natural super food. There are people who are allergic to nuts, strawberries and seafood.

Clearly if you are considering taking the Spirulina super food for the first time, you would be wise to be cautious, to check with your Doctor or Medical Professional first, just to be sure it’s right for you.
