Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol And Triglycerides

Studies Show, That Spirulina Is One Of The Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol And Triglycerides

According to an article by the US National Library of Medicines, Spirulina is now listed by the US Food and Drug Administration under the category of Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), as “many toxicological studies have proven Spirulinas safety”.

This is encouraging for potential consumers of the super-food Spirulina as there is a considerable body of evidence that this is one of the natural ways to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides. Studies show that Spirulina significantly reduces the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) “bad” cholesterol but does not impact on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as the “good” cholesterol. The study in the US National Library of Medicines is typically cautious. It adds; “more research is needed before Spirulina can be officially recommended to lower cholesterol levels. However, its role as a natural food supplement in combating hyperlipidaemia, in combination with other therapeutic options, “should not be overlooked”.

Other Spirulina Studies

In other Spirulina studies, it has been shown that with regular consumption of Spirulina, there was no “significant reduction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, otherwise known as “good” cholesterol but it “reduced significantly” the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, otherwise known as “bad” cholesterol. The UK Newspaper The Daily Express highlighted to its readers, the danger of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) “bad” cholesterol and described how Spirulina had been shown to reduce “bad” cholesterol.

Is Spirulina a way to reduce “bad” cholesterol fast? As the US National Library of Medicines article says, more evidence is still required to give a guaranteed answer. However, the growing body of evidence as highlighted in the UK Newspaper, certainly suggests it can be a helpful food supplement to help you achieve this. It’s encouraging to see the US Food and Drug Administration have listed Spirulina under the category; Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).

If you have high cholesterol and you are considering taking Spirulina to help manage it, you may wish to check with your Doctor or Medical Professional first, just to be sure its right for you. However, all the evidence I have seen, points to the fact that Spirulina is one of the natural way to reduce cholesterol.

    • Dear Jon,

With apologies for not replying much sooner. I have been reaching out to Australian suppliers. My best recommendation is to use e-Vitamins. They have an Aussie site that you can access via this link and click on the For Australia section.

Caution. DO NOT buy from any supplier that is not carefully recommended. I am in the process of checking others. However for now I am recommending specific brands within e-Vitamins and also via Amazon. The reason for this is carefully explained on this page.

Best Regards and thank you again for reaching out.

      Trevor

  1. Dear Jon,

Thank you for your enquiry. I am currently awaiting confirmation of Australian suppliers which I expect soon. Its important to ensure the supplier supplies quality Spirulina before I post any recommendations here. I am currently in the process of verifying various suppliers from Australia and New Zealand. Best Regards, Trevor

  2. I tend to favor natural remedies greatly because they have mostly been proven to have little to no adverse effects on our health in the long or short term. While studies are still underway to verify with all certainty, that spirulina is indeed, a safe and natural way to reduce cholesterol, I think the evidences so far is encouraging. Thanks for sharing

    • Hello Rhain,
Thank you for visiting us and leaving a note. Indeed, it is very encouraging regarding cholesterol. The studies so far are pretty clear that the superfood Spirulina reduces the “bad” cholesterol and has no impact on the “good” cholesterol. I know from personal experience that it reduces cholesterol. I have to visit industrial sites at high altitude, and we have to pass regular health checks. I was once borderline. I´m now, “well within normal limits”. And I have so much energy !
I far prefer taking Spirulina than taking a medication to reduce cholesterol!
      Thanks again for visiting us.
      Best Regards,
      Trevor

  3. Hello Trevor,

Regarding cholesterol levels, do you know if there is any relationship between spirulina dosage and ldl cholesterol level decrease? I’m thinking to start having spirulina to decrease my bad cholesterol and try to recover normal total cholesterol level.

    • Dear Rodrigo,

Thank you for visiting our site. I´m pleased to learn you are now taking Spirulina. My suggestion is that you start slowly and slowly increase, so 1 or 2 tablets a day at first and them increase to 3 or 4. I do not have the precise amounts for the reduction of bad (LDL) decrease or how long it will take, but I will research this and let you know. I am going to do a page on the amounts of spirulina one should take for different conditions. Please remember this is a “superfood”. Scientists advise that 3 grammes of spirulina is roughly the equivalent of 3 kilos of fruit and vegetables in terms of nutrients quite amazing eh! I take 6 tablets a day now, 3 grammes. 4 in the morning and two at lunchtime. I don´t take it in the evening.

Thank you again for visiting our site and for leaving this question. I will update this answer, once I have the amounts suggested.

      Have a great day.

      Best Regards,

      Trevor

    • Dear Rodrigo,

I promised to research how much Spirulina you should take to help with raised cholesterol. I recommended you take 1 or 2 tablets to start with. 2 tablets is typically 1 gramme, which is also recommended (See how to take) by this scientific site. They say it could be as much as 8 grammes a day. That is the equivalent of adding 8kg of vegetable and fruit nutrients to your body. That feels a bit excessive. I would start with 1 gramme, if your body has no side effects, then try increasing it to 2 grammes a day and so on. The impact will not be immediate. You need to be consistent over a period of some weeks, but eventually you will see the results. In the meantime, you are strengthening your body by adding extra nutrients to your body! Eventually you should notice you have raised energy levels too.

I hope you find that helpful. Please let me know the results of your next cholesterol test, I would be interested to hear the results.

      Best Regards,

      Trevor
