What You Will Need?

Steps to take

1. Collect some large see through PET plastic bottles. Wash with soap for at least 20 seconds each part of the bottle – leave to dry.

2. Collect A pair of any glasses, long distance glasses, sun glasses, protective work glasses, any glasses that will fit your head. Thoroughly clean the exterior side.

3. Find your scissors, para cord or cotton, needle, a sharp knife (sharpen it if you have to – the knife needs to be very sharp, be very careful as you use it). Sellotape or other nonporous sealant. Collect a small piece of cloth that you can sew to the handles of each supporting side of the glasses. And on the outside of the plastic.

4. Take the bottle and sharp knife to your stove or use a lighter. Heat the knife. (You can try with scissors but if you do not heat the cutting blade you may split the PET plastic.

5. With a hot knife, cut the top and bottom off of the bottle, Then cut it through one side to stretch it out flat (make sure the knife is very hot, to prevent it splitting the plastic:

6. Clean and dry the surfaces of the pet plastic.

7. Put on a pair of the glasses and then place the plastic sheet around your head to position the pet plastic. Mark where the supporting arms meet the plastic to fully cover your face, then cut 2 small holes about 2 cm`s in length and as narrow as possible. Use a hot knife again for this.

8. Wrap a small piece of cloth around each arm of your glasses. You will use this to sew the cotton or para cord onto the plastic.

9. Have a separate small piece of material to sew onto the outside of the plastic

Align the glasses with the plastic, now sew from the arm to the exterior piece of cloth, using the small hole to pass the needle through.

10. Once you have connected the glasses to the plastic, carefully cover the cloth on the outside with thick sellotape or some other kind of non permeable tape. Do the same on the inner side. You now have some basic protection for your next essential visit to the shops or elsewhere. Make sure you carefully wash your mask and maintain your mask after each external visit.

  4. For a moment I thought maybe the mask you are putting on is the professional one and was expecting to see the one you made at the end of the article hahaha. That’s a nice mask you got there and easy to make as well. In a world where everyone is concerned about where to get a mask and even a lot of people having money stolen from them trying to acquire this you just made it all so easy. Thanks for sharing this at a time when everyone really needs it.

    • Dear Michael,

Thank you so much for the kind feedback. I actually got the idea from a video in Spanish that I saw that an Argentine Doctor posted. Here in Latin America, people drink a lot of soft drinks, so they have plenty of PET bottles. I actually collected the ones I used from a recycling point near my house. It now serves as a useful extra backup to another mask I have for mine visits. I`m using it for short trips to the local shops – which is not often!

Have a great day and thank you for stoppiong by.

      Best Regards,

      Trevor

It’s also a really simple to make, and it helps with the environment! I’m sure a lot of us have empty plastic bottles and gallons in our home, so this is a really good idea. 12. Wow !Its good that you use discarded materials such as plastics and eyeglasses frames to make an improvised shield and barrier against contaminated covid19 droplet…because here in the philippines some of our frontliners are also using that. Its cheap and environmentally friendly, although it is not as effective compared to N95 filtering facepiece respirator against covid19 droplet but it is better than wearing nothing . And I think it is sustainable because its ecologically friendly.Thanks.

  13. You know, sometimes the simple ideas are the best. Your advice about staying at home, is the best anyone can give during these difficult times.

Every time I think about getting one of those paper face masks, I promptly forget when I am out. With your excellent tutorial, I need not worry, I can just make my own. Looking at the picture, I would say that this mask goes the extra mile.

Most of the masks that we are able to buy, only cover the nose and mouth. This probably helps with your own breath not contaminating any one else but doesn’t fully protect you. The eyes are also susceptible to the airborne virus particles. It is also, all to common for us to touch our own face and transfer anything onto our hands and then back again.

Your mask covers the entire face and because it’s made of plastic, it won’t allow anything through and can be re-used as many times as you like. Unlike other masks, this one can be easily washed. Cheaper and better, ideal.
