Natural Treatment For an Overactive Thyroid – Hyperthyroidism

Natural Treatment For an Overactive Thyroid

Is Spirulina a natural treatment for for an Overactive Thyroid  -Hyperthyroidism? Whilst we know somebody who “swears” by spirulina to help her hyperthyroidism, we have found no evidence that it’s a treatment, but it can help in terms of its high nutritional content.

Spirulina is somewhat misunderstood regarding the Thyroid because of a misunderstanding about Iodine.  This post is intended to help those who would like to take Spirulina as a superfood when they have been diagnosed with an Overactive Thyroid.

History

This cyanobacterium (Spirulina) has been around for 3.6 billion years! Researchers think it’s the; “the evolutionary bridge between bacteria and green plants and yet Spirulina is not well understood, particularly in the “West”. It was one of the building blocks for plant DNA but it’s not well understood!

For more background on the history please visit, our page on the history of Spirulina, to learn more.

Spirulina is NOT a seaweed. Technically it’s a cyanobacteria. Encyclopaedia Britannica defines it as a cyanobacteria. An even higher authority is referenced here.   As this paper suggests, it was created by GOD

A more recent authority,  Wikipedia says; “Modern botanists restrict the term algae to eukaryotes.  However, for the sake of simplicity we will call it a “blue-green algae” and that its from freshwater habitats.  That´s why its NOT a seaweed. Whilst there are tiny amounts of iodine in freshwater, e.g. rivers, it depends on the supplier.  We are checking with suppliers to establish levels of iodine in their spirulina and will share that information on the supplier page.

A Word About Iodine In Water.

River water has about 5 parts per billion (ppb) in river water. This compares to 60 ppb for seawater. Brown sea weed (This is NOT SPIRULINA) can have as much as 0.45% (dry mass) of iodine.  That why you have to be careful not to consume seaweed if you have been advised by your doctor to be careful about your iodine levels

So Lets Be Clear

Well produced Spirulina, that is cultivated in fresh and clean water does not have high iodine levels. I hope that helps clarify any concerns about iodine in Spirulina.  The key, is to buy from an appropriate producer.

Perhaps it would be easier if we all referred to Spirulina as being a “freshwater, blue green algae”. This is another definition. We think freshwater, blue green algae is the easiest definition for most people to understand. But technically, if you can pronounce it, it’s a cyanobacteria, that is cultivated in fresh water.

We emphasise on various pages in this site, the importance of obtaining your spirulina from a reliable, toxin free and secure supplier. That´s because as the cyanobacteria or freshwater, blue green algae grows, it soaks up anything that´s in its environment, i.e. in the water its growing in. So if there is iodine in the water, the Spirulina will soak it up. That is why we labour the point about selecting the Spirulina you consume carefully.

Its been around for 3.6 billion years

So its been around for 3.6 billion years. Think about that for a moment, 3.6 billion years! Its part of the building blocks of plant DNA. The cyanobacteria or freshwater, blue green algae has clearly played an important role in the early development of our planet! And we know it helps with the symptoms of numerous ailments described on this site.  However,  does it help Thyroid problems?

If you have have been diagnosed with an Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)  to enhance or improve your nutrition quickly, Yes. Just 3 grams of Spirulina is approximately the equivalent of 3 kilos of fruit and vegetables in terms of nutrition, so if you are looking to enhance your diet, Spirulina is a great choice.  But you have to be careful in your choice of brand.

If you have have been diagnosed with an Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism); i.e. your thyroid is overactive, according to this Medical Resource, you can add a well sourced Spirulina to your diet. But please check carefully with your Doctor or Medical Professional first.

My experience

My experience? Spirulina, has really helped me. I´m not a Doctor but I have an interest in alternative remedies. Since I was encouraged to take Spirulina by my Doctor, my health has improved considerably. I feel more energised
as if my body has been renewed. I have lost weight – a lot, combined with regular exercise. I genuinely feel 10 to 15 years younger than before. I have so much energy. My blood sugar levels have stabilised. My memory has improved immensely, my candida & IBS have gone and oh, and I rarely have gas or wind now! And I haven´t had a cold, an allergy, hay fever or the flu for three years. Blocked noses are now a distant memory.

How well researched is Spirulina? Is it safe for me to take?

Is it right for me? The more I have researched Spirulina I have found a few rare examples of people who had not had a good experience with Spirulina. However, let’s keep things in perspective, this is a natural super food. There are people who are allergic to nuts, strawberries and seafood.

Clearly if you are considering taking Spirulina for the first time, you would be wise to be cautious, to check with your Doctor or Medical Professional first, just to be sure it’s right for you.

  1. Hi Trevor,
By now I’ve read some number of articles on your website about Spirulina. Have to say that they are very informative and very well researched. I found a couple of areas in my health where I can definitely use it (NAFL is one of them).
In this article, you are talking about spirulina for hyperthyroidism. But I have Hypothyroidism (lived in Chernobyl affected zone for 5 years). Logically I understand that if it works for hyperthyroidism, it should not work for hypothyroidism? The question is would it make it worse? I am now on a very low dosage of medicine and just afraid to screw up the balance. Otherwise, I would love to try spirulina.
I know, you will say that I need to consult the doctor. Unfortunately, my doctor does not believe in natural cures, hence, does not know much about it.
I would really appreciate it if you have any information on spirulina and Hypothyroidism.
    Thanks,
    Jane

    • Thank you for your comment and question Jane. Let us look again at this in detail and we will give you a full answer. For now, we would say, that yes, you definitely ought to check with a Doctor. But perhaps you might seek the opinion of a different doctor/alternative remedy practitioner for a second opinion. We will research this further and leave a full reply here/email you. Thank you for your great question and comment. I will also contact an alternative therapy doctor we know as part of this research. Have a great day. Best Regards, Trevor

    • Hello Jane, I have emailed you with a possible solution. I think it may relate to iodine. So the trick will be identifying a good quality spirulina without iodine, in consultation, of course, with a Doctor. But please see my email for a suggested solution. Thank you again for your comment.

    • Hello Rona, Thank you for your question and I am sorry I have not been on the site for a while due to other committments. You really need to check with your medical professional. Have a reread of this article as we are aware of people successfully taking spirulina with an overactive thyroid. The source of Spirulina will be very important. One with little no iodine. A good brand as highlighted on this site. But I repeat, double check with your Doctor.
