Natural Cure For Dementia? Spirulina?

Is Spirulina A Natural Cure For Dementia?

Natural Cure For Dementia
Former Royal Naval WRENS during WW2

I don´t have dementia but there were two additional things I started to notice after taking Spirulina for my Fatty Liver & Blood Sugar Control. I had far more energy. I was thinking quicker and my memory was  sharper. Undoubtedly, I was thinking far more clearly and my memory seemed crystal clear. I was no longer forgetting “silly things”. Only a few years earlier, I had,  on occasions, gone to the office water cooler and forgotten why I was there! So embarrassing! Now such “mind fog” is a thing of the past, thanks to regularly consuming quality spirulina.

Is Spirulina A Prophylactic To Help Prevent Alzheimers/Dementia?

I have been semi-retired for 2 years but after taking Spirulina for a number of months I started to realise that my mind was more finely tuned. Whereas before I was forgetting “stupid” things, e.g. the water cooler incidents, now, it rarely happens. My mind is so much sharper than before I took Spirulina. Does Spirulina help the brain, or is spirulina a natural cure for Dementia I asked myself? Might it have helped my Mother? Or was it a sort of prophylactic that could help to prevent against alzheimers/dementia? I decided to undertake some research.

Distressing

I found it really distressing to see my once highly active Mother suffer from Dementia in the later years of her life. A 2018 study [1] from South Korea, described how thanks to advances in technology, lifespans were extending and subsequently, dementia, a degenerative brain disease, has come under increased scrutiny. Encouragingly, I read that the South Korean study had demonstrated in experiments the “cognitive” (i.e. brain) “improving effects of Spirulina” [1].

Spirulina May Help Prevent Memory Loss, & Reduce Oxidative Damage

Oxidative stress is often present in those with dementia [6].  A Taiwanese study concluded that Spirulina may “prevent the loss of memory” [2] which seems consistent with the findings from the South Korean study [1] which highlighted how “Spirulina has memory-improving effects”.  The Taiwanese study [2] found that spirulina may help to prevent memory loss, by reducing oxidative damage”. I wish I had known that 10 years ago, to help my Mother more. But key to this, is that it needs to be taken in sufficient quantities, we offer advice on this via this click throughAnd you need to be sure of the quality of the spirulina you are taking, in exactly the same way as you would buy organic, fresh or quality food for your diet and that of your loved ones. The difference in “value” brand prices and top end spirulina  is relatively minimal.

Spirulina Reduces Stroke-Related Brain Damage

Interestingly in a comparative study [3] from Baltimore USA, involving Spirulina, blueberries and spinach, it was “shown to reduce stroke-related brain damage,” further evidence that spirulina was good for brain health.  I hope you are getting the picture that this super food could be a way to eat your way to better brain health?  Its notable that for many years, the pharmaceutical industry has struggled to come up with an effective medication for Alzheimers/Dementia [5].

Its Been Staring At Us In The Face For Billions of Years.

Might the simplest solution, or one that at least helps to slow down or mitigate symptoms, has been staring at us in the face, in the shape of a superfood that has existed for billions of years? Whilst it might not be a natural cure for dementia, these studies [1,2, 3] show it might help. Its got to be worth giving it a try right? Anecdotal evidence from Mexico, one of the countries where spirulina was first discovered, suggests that spirulina helps to slow the progress of alzheimers/dementia. As do other resources. [7]

Anything Else?  What About the Gut-Brain Connection?

There is growing evidence that the gut-brain connection is important and that they communicate with each other.  The gut is sometimes even referred to as ‘The second brain”. Not long ago, it was discovered that our gut and brain are connected via one of the biggest nerves in the body that is called the vagus nerve. Problems in the gut can contribute or lead to gastrointestinal problems, autoimmune disorders, and diseases, depression, brain fog, and much more. So, its important our guts are kept in good order. We know from other research that spirulina helps gastrointestinal problems and in some countries, doctors say it can help you to overcome such disorders.

2020

More recently, a 2020 study [4] from China has shown that spirulina helps to reduce inflammation in the gut. Bearing in mind that high fat diets, notably cheese [8] are linked to a higher risk of alzheimers/dementia, this study [4] that was focused on animals, that were fed a high fat diet, seems significant.

Spirulina helps to protect against Alzheimer’s*

And in a University Health News article [9] from 2017, they speak of the benefits of spirulina in terms of its benefits for brain function and memory. They describe how Spirulina helps to protect against Alzheimer’s “by reducing levels of amyloid-beta proteins throughout the brain”.  If you, like me in the past, have had a high fat diet or are obese, you might want to think about ordering some spirulina to start detoxing to help benefit from its benefits and possibly reduce your risk of dementia.*

More Evidence that spirulina helps

More evidence on how spirulina helps to mitigate alzheimer’s and in particular vitamins B1, B6 and B12 that can be found in good quality spirulina (NB not all are!) can be found at healthyantiagingalternatives.com. You can order quality spirulina via this click through.  There is also an excellent Chilean Spirulina that is difficult to obtain out of Chile but we can make arrangements to ship some to you.  Please contact us at contact@whyspirulina.com or contact us on Whattsapp +56 9 4426 0930 if you are in Chile or Latin America and would like to purchase some.

Chlorella

Spirulina´s cousin, chlorella, may also be a useful superfood to consider adding to your diet to prevent “age-dependent memory loss and cognitive decline” as a chlorella study highlights. [10]

Very encouraging, all good so far

Where To Obtain Your Supplies From?  How Much To Take?

Where you obtain Spirulina supplies from is critical to your success with spirulina (& Chlorella).

The growing environment is critical.

Wherever Spirulina grows, it acts like a sponge, picking up and absorbing anything in the water it grows in.  This might include toxins if they are in the water.  Some supplies, notably from China, when tested, have been found to contain some toxins, including toxic metals. Where I live, there are Spirulina supplies available from Chile & China. As I am sure you know, Chilean wine, fruits and Salmon are excellent. Chile has very high health and safety standards. If I cannot obtain a stock of Spirulina from these suppliers, who have well sourced and safe Spirulina, I will only buy the Chilean Spirulina. Its possible the Chinese supply is safe and knowing Chile´s strict regulations, that is likely, but for a few extra cents, would you risk it?  This is a superfood that might prevent the onset of alzheimers/dementia (& Parkinsons – see below)*.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Is Spirulina A Silver Bullet? Is Spirulina A Natural Cure For Dementia?

We would not want to leave you with the impression that the spirulina superfood is a “silver bullet”. But prevention is better than cure.  Our conclusion is that spirulina is probably best described as a sort of prophylactic, (a bit like an anti malarial prophylactic) a sort of natural preventative for this horrible alzheimers/dementia disease*.  Until the pharmaceutical can produce a reliable medication, in the face of the growing alzheimers/dementia pandemic, the superfood spirulina may indeed be our best ally.  It certainly seems to be a promising, providing, and this is key, you take it regularly and consistently, i.e. daily over a period of time. Remember it’s a superfood, not a medication.  Don´t expect to see results overnight!* Our guidance onhow much spirulina to take?might be useful to you.

The Gut Brain Connection – How it Impacts on Dementia & Alheimers

Briefly it does ! Your diet matters and spirulina can help you improve your diet in a very practical and direct way by taking quality spirulina supplements. The Gut brain connection is now better understood and is further explored and explained by one of our guest writers Paula Dunbar in this click through.

Parkinson`s

We have also looked at Spirulina & Parkinson`s.  Check our October 2020 article and the benefit of spirulina with Parkinson`s on this page.

Guam

This page would be incomplete without adding a reference to an old and inconclusive study (11) (2009) from Guam.  The study called for further research, which incredibly, bearing in mind the growing alzheimers/dementia pandemic, still, to our knowledge, has not been undertaken.

For a while, the Guam study cast some doubt on Spirulina´s benefits with regard to Alzheimer’s Disease.  The Guam study connected the intake (a high amount) of Cycad seeds by the indigenous community, with a compound found in spirulina. Bearing in mind the increasing and rising global pandemic that Alzheimer’s/Dementia is growing to be, at best this seems extremely surprising, as a solution to Alzheimers/Dementia is urgently required.

Are You Concerned About The Risk of Alzheimers/Dementia?

If you eat or ate a high fat diet for many years, you might be.

If you are concerned about the risk of alzheimers/dementia, or you have a loved one with early signs, possibly a regular consumption of spirulina and chlorella could be the best preventative or prophylactic you could try.* Particularly if you had a high fat diet in your younger years.  You are also likely to see a wide range of other benefits too.*

You may also wish to check this short U-Tube Video that discusses how spirulina can help protect your brain against alzheimers/dementia and Parkinson´s disease.

Where to Buy Spirulina?

At whyspirulina.com we emphasise the importance that when you consume the Spirulina super-food, you should do so from a reliable and safe supply. Please be cautious & don´t buy contaminated or old stock or you will not see any benefits.  This is important for anybody seeking to see the benefits of spirulina, but in terms of a possible preventative for alzheimers/dementia, it is arguably even more important.

Those we recommend on our site are from smaller specialist suppliers rather than huge Corporate companies who do not really understand these specialist products, where they may sit in hot warehouses or on shelves for long periods of time, impacting their efficacy.

Where does spirulina come from? Its history is fascinating!

We go into some detail about this on our history of Spirulina page. Its worth a read.

So is it safe for me to take?

This is a common question we hear.  There are a few exceptions but for most people its fine. And typically, once they try it, they rave about it afterwards. Particularly when you notice the boost in energy or friends and family compliments about “how good” you are lookingOr say, “Somehow you look younger”!

But before you order, please do check out this click through for more details and for those very few conditions where spirulina is best avoided. Our goal is to help people with this site.

  1. Very Comprehensive, a great deal of information to absorb. I am a great believer in Natural Health. I’m 82 and take zero Medication. Kumbucha Tea might be a great addition to your product line.

    • Thank you for visiting us Richard. Thank you for the suggestion about Kumbucha Tea. Where does it come from? I cannot say enough how much spirulina has helped to turn my physical health around. I was a typical “man”, only went to see the Doctor when I was dying and that I think was delayed by many years thanks to spirulina. As you are so honest about your age, you might find the following articles interesting and helpful: energy & andropause. I no longer need to buy a certain blue pill and I have so much energy its unbelievable. I`m 60 this year but feel as if I am in my late 30`s – 40`s with my energy levels.

  2. I like your post! It was fascinating and good to learn that spirulina may be a way to help mitigate dementia/Alzheimers.How much spirulina do you think they should take in order for it to be effective?  Using something natural like spirulina in their drinks or food can be much easier. And it will help them big time.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Spirulina like any food or supplement when it is properly handled, processed, and used can be a useful supplement to your existing diet. It’s very dense in both calories and protein per-gram compared to other foods and it consists of almost all the amino acids your body requires to function properly, as well as many key vitamins and minerals. In talking about the natural cure for Dementia. I am not really aware of that but with its natural supplement i think it will be of great help in treating Dementia.

    • Thank you Joshua.  Its good to see you have picked up the key point that spirulina is a tool to help treat dementia, it is not a cure.  I´m glad you agree having read our article and seen our links with its a way to help treat it, even if it is not a “cure”.  You are also spot on regarding the amino acids. Yes spirulina is dense in protein and you are right, it contains almost all the amino acids our bodies need to function properly.  In fact, we have read, that if you are stranded in a remote location but you have spirulina, it gives you enough nutrients to survive!

  4. Hello there, people dealing with dementia are out there and most do not know of any cure or solution for dealing with it at all.  While some people & patients are not in the financial state to be able to go to the hospital to get treated. However, seeing a natural means to help treat this, even if it is not a complete cure, is very important and I am really glad to have come across the article. I’ll love to share with others on my social media page

    • Thank you Michael for your comment.   I am glad you have picked up on the key point that quality spirulina is, according to the studies we have referenced, not a cure, but a way to help mitigate symptoms for dementia and alzheimers.  The link with the stomach/gut is also important.  We should all be seeking to adopt preventative measures with our diet such as avoiding cheese and eating a Mediterranean diet. Spirulina is a tool to help fight the initial onset of dementia and is definitely worth trying for those with early symptoms.  Its important to take it consistently. The advice on how much spirulina to take, may be useful to those you plan to share it with too.

  5. Hello there! Thank you for dropping this article on natural cure for dementia. It’s a very helpful article, very detailed and contains valuable information. I’ve come across spiriluna before and I saw that it helps with herpes. Seeing now that its also a natural cure for dementia makes me really interested in it? Please where do I get it from? I’ll really appreciate if you can reply my comment, thank you.

    • Thanks Sophie, I`m glad you found this helpful.  Just to be very clear, spirulina is not a “cure” for dementia but the evidence from studies and anecdotal evidence, is that if taken regularly and in sufficient amounts, its a way to help with symptoms. And seems to mitigate dementia symptoms.  It is absolutely critical to source spirulina from a good supply, we recommend these brands.

  6. This is my first time hearing of Spirulina or it’s medical benefits but I must say that I was really impressed by what I read about in your article.  And I must say that I really think that the superfood is so beneficial for so many conditions, including dementia. Dementia is an illness that has been ravaging families but there being a way to help treat symptoms with this superfood is good news.

  7. I didn’t think that a superfood could be a cure for dementia. Dementia causes memory loss so I was surprised when my aunt recommended it to me.  I have already started using spirulina for some time now.. Spirulina like you said it did for you has also given me more energy and made my memory even sharper too, so I can also agree with you that it can work for dementia.

  9. Thank you for sharing your website!  I found it very engaging. I have gone through most of your contents. I enjoyed reading it and also got the chance of being exposed to so much useful information. I believe educating people about the benefits of Spirulina, through your website is an excellent opportunity for people to learn about it. You are right about iron pills, how they are made. I would definitely buy Spirulina to benefit from it with my daily meals.  Can spirulina also help Parkinson`s patients or help other memory loss?

    Reply
    • Hello Meena and thank you for stopping by to comment on our site.  I see you have experience of iron pills, we were really surprised to learn how they are made!  As spirulina contains iron, for those who need a boost of iron to help overcome anaemia it can do this by taking a good quality spirulina (that is key, the growing conditions have to be spotless!).

Yes as well as helping to reduce or mitigate the risk of Dementia and Alzheimers (our article highlights the evidence) good quality spirulina also seems to be helpful with the prevention of Parkinson`sSpirulina is not a cure for any of these conditions but as a functional food, it seems to reduce the risk and possibly help those with early symptoms. I know I was astonished by how much my memory improved.  The other advantage of taking spirulina regularly in sufficient quantities is that you will also see the wide range of other benefits too.  But do also check our history page that highlights the few number of conditions where spirulina is best avoided.*

  10. Hi Trevor. As usual, your article is very informative and comprehensive. I don’t have Dementia (yet), but my mother had Dementia. I think I have her structure of brain and memory. I used to have a great memory, but some time ago I started to forget some simple things, the same as you mentioned. Memory loss is the second major problem (the first is NAFL) I would probably need to start taking it. I am still researching what is better spirulina or a combination of spirulina and Chlorella. Any recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Jane

    • Hello Jane, thank you for visiting us again.  I`m glad you liked this article and found it comprehensive.  We try hard to find adequate supporting evidence for all of our articles. Indeed, if we don`t have the evidence we avoid publishing.

You might be interested to learn that we are in the middle of setting up an arrangement with a spirulina supplier who produce, arguably the best spirulina in the World.  You might want to try this spirulina as its the type we use that is grown in Chile using the original “vine or strain” from Mexico.  The original “strains” of spirulina are from Mexico and Chad.  If you want to try spirulina, that is the one to take.  My health has been revolutionised with this spirulina.  I have SO MUCH energy!  I`m 60  this month but I bounce around like a teenager – almost 🙂

I would recommend you try spirulina first.  Chlorella is also great but it tends to be harder for people to get used to,  So try the spirulina first would be my advice.  Best Regards Trevor

  11. As a consumer of Spirulina myself, I can confidently say that it definitely improves one’s glucose metabolism due to its high fibre content and protein. I also heard that it helps Alzheimers which is great too.

In addition, it also aids in aiding weight loss.

Overall, one can expect overall well-being by having spirulina tablets on a daily basis.

Thanks for this very informative post.
