Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol And Triglycerides

A considerable body of evidence exists that Spirulina offers one of the natural ways to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides*. A Greek study (1) in 2014 demonstrated that it significantly reduces the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) “bad” cholesterol but does not impact on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol.

Update 3 Sept 2020: We are preparing a new post regarding liver health.  We have found further evidence that spirulina helps to reduce “bad” cholesterol. And is great to boost liver health!

Clinical Trials Study Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol Levels

The first Spirulina clinical trial (2) in 1988 where patients received a daily dose of 4.2g of Spirulina and its potential for cholesterol lowering effects, demonstrated a significant reduction of high-density lipoprotein (LDL) “bad” cholesterol after patients recieved Spirulina for 8 weeks.

Importantly, this study noted that it did not reduce the “good” HDL cholesterol.

Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol Levels

A 1995 Indian study (3) confirmed the 1988 trial. They gave Spirulina supplements to heart disease patients and found a “significant reduction in blood cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL “bad” cholesterol whilst they observed an increase in HDL “good” cholesterol.” And a further diabetic related study (4) involving Spirulina, produced findings that support the results of those clinical studies.

These studies typically end with a call for more “research”, but there is considerable supporting evidence, that the super-food Spirulina, lowers “bad” cholesterol.

Natural Ways To Reduce Cholesterol And Triglycerides

In our post of 23 January 2020, we first highlighted the benefits of Spirulina to help manage cholesterol. With the evidence we have highlighted in this article, we believe it is reasonable for us to say that the regular use of Spirulina, is one of the natural ways to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides*.
